Book Review: Deranged by Harold Schechter

Title: Deranged
Author: Harold Schechter
Genre:True Crime
Total Pages: 303
Summary:
This book follows a serial killer named Albert Fish and the horrendous crimes he committed in the 1920's and 1930's. It starts off by his most infamous crime, the kidnapping of a 10 year old girl, Grace Budd. For years her parents and the police force try to find her kidnapper and try to link him to other "cold cases" committed in the past. Albert Fish would go by many alias' and would show up to people's houses and claim he was a good guy. With ease, he would convince parents and their children that he meant no harm and was simply a good person. There were several unsolved kidnappings where they simply didn't have enough evidence to convict someone of the crime, but sooner or later the head detective William King would find the shocking evidence he needed to put him away for good.
Review:
Even though it had some material that was hard to read, it was extremely interesting. The main thing I liked about the book was that the parents and police force never gave up and made it their mission to find out what truly happened. I would not want to change anything about this book because it is a true story and it should be told without falsifying what happened. This book is a good read and i would recommend it because it constantly has new and shocking information that keeps you wanting to keep reading. However, there are several chapters that go into detail about gruesome and disturbing things which might not be for everyone.

  1. Already knowing that the genre is true crime interests me in the book since that is a topic that intrigues me. I agree with how there shouldn't be anything changed to the story since it is a true one. Overall I like how you described the summary and plot

  2. I saw this book as I was looking for a true crime book, but I put it back down. It seems like this book is fairly interesting, so I'll definitely put it on my to-do list.
