To All the Boys I've Loved Before - 1st quarter SSR

To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before
Jenny Han - Romance
368 pages

Summary :
My book is about a girl named Lara Jean, and her life in high school. She has a hat box ( that her mother gave her when she was little ) where she keeps all her love letters. The love letters are not from boys, but rather ones Lara Jean wrote herself to boys she loved. She wrote them out, and stored them away as a way to get over the crush she had over the past three years. One day, she finds that all 5 of her love letters had been mailed out, and her life is thrown out of control. She tries to bring her life back to normal through lies, but she faces many challenges along the way.

Review :
I personally felt connected to the main character in this book, because I feel that every teenage girl has related to Lara Jean's feelings of liking a boy at one time in their life. I did feel that the major plot points were pretty predictable, because the story tended to foreshadow a lot of the situations by bringing it up in discrete ways ( like through the characters own thoughts ). I also think it was predictable because it was more of a basic love story - nothing too unexpected. In my opinion, the writing was simplistic, but that honestly made it easier for me to understand and allowed me to form questions/predictions throughout the book. To me, the main character ( Lara Jean ) was dynamic, because she learned a lot from her personal situation, but I feel the other characters were static. The plot of the story was more focused on Lara Jean and her growth compared to the other characters. I feel that this helped the story by allowing the reader to mainly focus upon Lara Jean’s personal growth through her experiences, but also that it hurt the book by not exploring the problems deeply through the other characters. If I had to change anything about the book, I would probably just go into more depth with the people surrounding her, rather than just focusing on the problem the entire time. Other than that, I really enjoyed the book :)

  1. Nina this is such a good book choice, I really loved when I read it. This book is a typical romance novel but then at the same time isn't. The story line is typical but when you read and watch the movie it's also so different. I also like you're point that the book really is all about her and that the people around her are barely talked about, if the author would have went more in depth with them I feel it would of been more personal.

  2. I loved loved this movie. At first I thought it was going to be one of those cliche love stories but it ended up being really good and so sweet. This is also another movie that I never knew had a book to it. I will most definitely check out the book and compare it to the movie to see which one I enjoy more.

  3. I saw the movie and loved it. I definitely have to check the book out because I would love to read about Lara Jean's thoughts in more detail. The story is pretty cheesy but still cute as heck. (:

  4. I like recently saw this movie this past weekend and I loved it! I really want to read the book now and get all the parts that they might have left out of in the movie.
